FERC-CGT is a federation of CGT ("Confédération générale du travail") unions, in the fields of teaching, research, higher education and culture. Within this federation, a national PhD candidate collective ("CGT doctorant·es") is actively working to defend the rights of precarious workers in research and higher education, particularly doctoral students, and "vacataires d'enseignement" (i.e. lecturers with no work contracts), but also early-career researchers.
The PhD candidate collective of the FERC-CGT is a group whose main goals are to:
- federate PhD candidates from different institutions and with different statuses (with or without permanent contracts, lecturers, workers who are employed by private companies...);
- draft and share documentation and experiences to defend our rights and earn new ones, at the local and the national scales. For example, a guide to PhD candidates representation was produced by the collective;
- to connect the struggles of PhD candidates with those of other categories of academic staff (administrative, technical, library and logistics staff, etc.).
