The European Commission has recently launched a manifesto to maximise the accessibility of research results in the fight against COVID-19. The manifesto provides guiding principles for beneficiaries of EU research grants for coronavirus prevention, testing, treatment and vaccination to ensure that their research results will be accessible for all and guarantee a return on public investment. The manifesto seeks support and endorsement from public and private stakeholders benefiting from EU funding, as well as other organizations and individuals.
Open Science is one of the main areas of activity for Eurodoc for many years, and Open Access to research outputs is one of its main pillars. Open Science has proven positive effect on many aspects of research lifecycle and professional development of individual researchers. Under the current circumstances, Open Science can dramatically increase the scientific communities’ effectiveness in overcoming challenges caused by natural and man-made emergencies. We believe that open and rapid access to scientific knowledge is crucial for fighting current and future global threats, such as COVID-19, and has to be implemented as soon as possible.
Thus, Eurodoc endorses the Manifesto for EU COVID-19 Research making another step on the path of consistent support of Open Access, FAIR principles and effective collaboration in science. “We fully support the Manifesto and the Open Science activities across Europe. However, we recommend that related Open Science practices must extend beyond the context of the pandemic to become mainstream,” said Giulia Malaguarnera, the President of Eurodoc.
