Different terms are used for researchers who have received their PhD but have not yet reached senior rank. 'Junior Researcher' is a term coined by Eurodoc to refer to people who have been awarded a doctoral degree and are engaged in a temporary and defined period of advanced, not yet fully independent research, either in academia, in the public or in the private sector.
Eurodoc presents its definition of Junior Researchers and an overview of challenges they face in a paper developed by its working group Employment and Career Development. It complements a prior paper defining doctoral candidates and serves as a starting point for further discussions on what needs to be done to provide Junior Researchers with adequate employment and working conditions as well as career prospects.
