Travel to Tampere:
The easiest way to travel to Tampere from abroad is first by plane to Helsinki Airport. There is an airport also in Tampere (Pirkkala), but they do not have many international flights and connected flights via Helsinki often take more time and are more expensive. Thus, we recommend to check both options but flying to Helsinki Airport is often more convenient.
From Helsinki Airport there are direct train and bus connections to Tampere. Bus to Tampere leaves in front of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and usually costs 27 euros one-way. The bus trip takes about 2 h 15 mins.
Train station is connected to the airport. From Helsinki Airport one takes first a Commuter train P to Tikkurila (distance about 8 mins), where one needs to change trains to Tampere (Pendolino, InterCity, regional trains). Train ticket prices vary but are usually around 21 euros one-way (Helsinki Airport – Tampere, including the commuter train to Tikkurila). Thus, a train should be a cheaper and faster option to Tampere than a bus! When returning from Tampere to Helsinki Airport, the connection from Tikkurila to Helsinki Airport is Commuter train I. The whole train trip takes about 1 h 30 mins to 2 hours.
There is a good chance for discounts if tickets are booked in advance:
Train tickets can be booked online: www.vr.fi
Bus tickets can be booked online: www.matkahuolto.fi
Tickets can also be purchased at train stations (ticket machines) or from a bus driver. Nota bene: in bus one can usually pay only in cash or with a Visa credit card!
Nota bene: If you wish to travel first to Helsinki city center, you need to take a train to Tampere from the central railway station (Helsinki). Long distance busses leave from bus station Kamppi (in Helsinki city center) and come to Tampere bus station.
From Helsinki city center, one can also look for (usually) cheaper bus connections by OnniBus: www.onnibus.com
Eurodoc members and delegates need to take care of their own plane/train/bus tickets and travel costs. Possible reimbursement of travel costs by Eurodoc will be handled after the event according to Eurodoc rules.
